Creating a world-class Begena requires weeks of patient labor, profound wood-working expertise, and a deep respect for acoustic traditions.
1. Selecting and Seasoning Wanza Wood
The process begins with selecting premium Wanza wood (cordia africana), renowned in Ethiopia for its resonance, durability, and rich grain. The timber is naturally seasoned for months to prevent warping.
2. Carving the Soundbox
Master artisans hand-chisel the heavy wooden block into a hollow resonance chamber. Every millimeter of thickness is tested by ear to ensure optimal acoustic vibration.
3. Hide Mounting and Beeswax Tuning
An animal hide is stretched tightly across the soundbox face. Specially prepared beeswax pellets are applied to the bridge and strings to adjust tension and create the signature buzzing resonance.
