The Begena (በገና) is one of the most remarkable and spiritually significant musical instruments in the world. Often referred to as the Harp of King David, this majestic ten-stringed instrument holds a revered place in Ethiopian culture and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
Anatomy and Unique Construction
Crafted entirely by hand, a traditional Begena features a large wooden soundbox carved from seasoned Wanza wood (cordia africana), covered with a treated animal hide, and mounted with a heavy wooden bridge and ten tuning pegs. The strings are traditionally made from sheep gut or specialized horsehair, producing a deep, meditative, and resonant hum unlike any other stringed instrument.
Spiritual and Meditative Purpose
Unlike secular instruments designed for dancing and celebration, the Begena is played primarily for introspection, spiritual contemplation, and praise. Its gentle, buzzing acoustic resonance is traditionally used to calm the soul, invite divine reflection, and accompany spiritual poetry and psalms.
